Week 8 Post 1

There are many different parts of writing an introduction and conclusion. Starting off with an introduction, it is vital you have an attention getter. If it starts off boring, no one will want to listen to your speech. Attention grabbers might include a fact, statistic, story or a joke. After that, you want to indicate your purpose and thesis along with establishing credibility. The last part to an introduction is previewing what you will be talking about in the following body paragraphs.
In a conclusion, you need to recall all the main points of the speech, reinforce your purpose and provide closure. Making a dramatic statement, thanking the audience or ending with a quote are a few ideas to end your conclusion.
When I write a paper, I tend to use a lot of personal stories and jokes. When I prepare a speech, I tend to stick with facts and statistics, so it doesn’t become personal. I don’t feel comfortable joking with an audience, because it might not go as planned or might be hard to understand. For this upcoming speech I am trying to figure out a statistic that everyone can relate to, but also make it personal. I haven’t yet figured out how to do that, but it will happen! And for the conclusion, I need help with reinforcing the main points in my speech. Any suggestions?

  1. I can not give you any suggestions but I can share with you my opinion. I like that you thinking about how your speech can relate to your audience. It's very important but I know that if your topic will not be related to me during your speech it can relate to me in couple months later and I'll remember what I heard from your speech and it can be useful. When we write our speech in a paper it's easy to write personals stories and jokes but giving the speech we don't feel comfortable joking with an audience because it might not to go as planned or might be hard to understand. Don't even think about it because we are all students and right now it's time to make something good or bad practicing our speech. We should challenge our self and try do something new and if something not go as we planned we have to do our best to find the way from the difficult situation. I think we have a good time to make a mistake and learn on our or classmates mistakes because in 2 months we will finish this course and maybe never see each other. So don't think about critiques, do your speech as you want to do and we will be learning together. I wish you success and good result.

  2. I actually usually enjoy making a speech personal and injecting humor, however, I don't think that an informative speech is the proper setting for this technique. In chapter 13 under the guidelines for giving an effective informative speech it says to keep your speech informative, carefully avoiding injecting any personal opinions, suggestions, evaluations etc. Although you CAN make an informative speech personal, you have to do so very delicately because it is easy to reveal to much personal information, which can tarnish the credibility of your speech. It's best to keep the speech purely informative and work on relating it to the audience. Humor and personality is best used in a speech to entertain. Anyways, as for reinforcing your purpose, I would suggest that you think of what it is you wanted to impart to the audience, then put it in to writing.
